ABOUT
FATHER FLANAGAN

The Father Flanagan Visitor Centre offers an illuminating and intimate glimpse into the Ireland of Father Flanagan’s time and the formative influences that shaped the visionary priest, leading to his founding of Boys Town and his pioneering work in the formation of youth policy.

Long before he rose to prominence and attained international acclaim for his revolutionary work with America’s abandoned and orphaned children, Father Edward Flanagan was an Irish farm lad, growing up in the green pastures of Ballymoe, learning the lessons of life on a parent’s knee.

Remarking on his rural upbringing, Father Flanagan fondly recalled a life “full of beauty and loveliness”. He often said that it was his childhood in Ireland, his faith, his family and community that formed his thinking in developing his policies of childcare.  It was here in Ballymoe that the seeds of his virtuous life were sown.
